PLANS OF BUILDING HYDROPOWER PLANTS
THREATEN RIVER DRAVA IN CROATIA/

IT'S ENOUGH! – Lets save Drava from new
hydropower plants/

The Drava River in Croatia is one of the last natural rivers in Europe, especially the area where the Molve 1 and 2 hydropower plants are planned. Hydropower plant construction would irretrievably destroy the most conserved Drava river ecosystems and would have a direct negative impact on the local population and natural and cultural heritage of Podravina region in Croatia.

Drava River needs our help!/

*(Hrvatska verzija peticije niže u tekstu)

We call on the Koprivnica‐Križevci County Prefect Mr. Darko Koren to stop the inclusion of the Molve 1 and 2 hydropower plants into the Spatial Plan of Koprivnica‐Križevci County and to stop supporting the construction of new hydropower plants on the Drava River!

Plans for the construction of the Molve 1 and 2 hydropower plants threaten the Drava River in Croatia!

The Drava River in Croatia is one of the last natural rivers in Europe, but it is threatened by the plan for construction of new hydropower plants. The IV. Amendments to the Spatial Plan of the Koprivnica‐Križevci County foresee the construction of two hydropower plants in the heart of the “Amazon of Europe” (HPP Molve 1 and 2).

If the hydropower plants enter the spatial plan, the legal preconditions for their construction will be fulfilled. Their construction would irretrievably destroy the exceptional biodiversity of this area and prevent planning of other activities in the area, such as sustainable tourism or river restoration, largely funded by the EU.

Due to its natural value, the entire Drava River in Croatia is included in the European Union's Natura 2000 Network, the Mura‐Drava Regional Park and the UNESCO Cross‐Border Biosphere Reserve Mura‐Drava‐Danube.

On Drava we can find an abundance of pebbly and steep shores, the most endangered river habitats that are home to endangered bird species such as Little tern or Sand martin whose numbers are drastically declining. Only four pairs of Little tern still live on the Drava River!

In the Drava there are more than 70 fish species, more than in any other river in Croatia. The impact of the hydropower plant on the fish stock would be extremely large due to prevention of migration and disappearance of key habitats due to accumulation lakes.

Consequences of construction would be large also downstream. Lowering of the groundwater level would reduce the amount of water in the Drava aquifer from which we draw drinkable water for about 300,000 inhabitants. The fall in groundwater levels would also affect the oak‐tree forests, which would be felt by the domestic wood industry.

The construction of dams and accumulations would cause a reduction in natural retention capabilities that protect us from major floods and cause the change in the microclimate of this area.

The construction of Molve 1 and 2 hydropower plants would irretrievably destroy the Drava River ecosystems, which would directly have a negative impact on the local population and the cultural heritage of this region. In the whole of Europe, no major hydropower plant was built within the ecological network of Natura 2000. Let’s not allow Croatia to be the first and say IT'S ENOUGH!

It is important that we leave our most precious natural habitats to our children and give them the opportunity to grow up along the natural Drava River, as we did!

Planovi o izgradnji hidroelektrana Molve 1 i 2 ugrožavaju rijeku Dravu!

Izmjene i dopune Prostornog plana Koprivničko‐križevačke županije koji predviđa izgradnju dviju hidroelektrana u srcu Europske Amazone (HE Molve 1 i 2).

– Pomozite nam spasiti rijeku Dravu i potpišite peticiju!
