Amazon bleeding oil

To President Lula, :

We, citizens of the world representing this generation and the next ones, urge you to act to stop any attempt to explore oil in the Amazon region. This ecosystem is way too precious to be tampered with. The Amazon is a gift to humanity and Brazil was given the gift of stewarding it into a clean future. Stand up to this task.

Amazon bleeding oil
If we don't act now, the very heart of the Amazon will start bleeding oil into its waters, impacting the richest biome on Earth and throwing off the balance of the climate in the whole world.

But this is a message of hope, not of despair.

Magda Chambriard just took office as the head of Petrobras, Brazil’s biggest oil exploration company – which is also a major global player. And Magda’s first priority? Explore oil in the mouth of the Amazon River! She is now even pushing for President Lula to intervene and make the environment agency allow it.

Let’s make sure our pressure to protect the Amazon is stronger than hers to exploit it. Lula cares deeply about his image - both at home and abroad, and protecting the Amazon has long been a key priority for Brazilians. We can win this fight – if he feels enough of us around the world are watching. Sign now and let's make history as the people that protected the Amazon at this crucial moment in the human journey.

Ibama, the Brazilian national institute of environmental protection, already examined the project and ruled it out. The impact on the Amazon ecosystem would just be too damaging. And even if the project had enough regulations in place, we all know that in a corrupt country like Brazil, they could never be fully enforced – putting the Amazon at an unacceptably high risk.

Magda is letting her ambition to save a dying business take over, crushing our future. Oil has to end. Clean energy has to step up in its place - and Petrobras will have to either adapt or collapse.

Lula needs to prioritise helping Brazil’s poor recover from years of COVID and disastrous economic policies from Bolsonaro, and he might be tempted to concede and take the short-term option. We cannot let that happen. We need to gather millions of voices to be so loud we cannot be ignored: not like this! Brazilians overwhelmingly want a clean way out of poverty! Let's stand with them.
