Since Vladimir Putin launched his illegal invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, millions of citizens from all over the world have joined their voices to call for an end to the war, for the return of Ukraine's stolen children, and for Putin to be held accountable for his crimes. And now we're coming together to take that first step towards that accountability by making sure that President Putin never sets foot on South African soil. Countries committed to justice should not welcome war criminals with open arms.
Here are some things you might want to include in your message to South African President Ramaphosa – but remember, it's best to use your own words and keep your message kind and respectful:
President Ramaphosa - the world views South Africa as a beacon of freedom and human rights, and you were part of the struggle that made it so. Don't blemish that legacy by welcoming a war criminal responsible for abducting children.
I am shocked that South Africa is rolling out the red carpet for a wanted war criminal.
This is a make or break moment for South Africa's moral leadership. Will you stand with Ukraine's stolen children or with the man who stole them?
President Ramaphosa, I urge you to vow to arrest Putin if he dares to set foot in South Africa. The only other option is to make sure he doesn’t travel at all.
