To Minister for Communications, Malcolm Turnbull:

As concerned Australian citizens, we call on you to scrap the government’s plan to introduce mandatory data retention - including the proposed interim measure - and to oppose any future attempt to revise the current laws. You have previously spoken about your commitment to protecting individual liberty and privacy. We ask that you uphold that commitment now.

  • Mandatory metadata retention is a breach of all Australians privacy. Current metadata laws are sufficient for enforcement purposes.
  • Mandatory metadata retention would be extraordinarily expensive, punishing providers and making tax payers pay to be spied on.
  • This plan has been rushed, undefined and many questions remain such as: who will have access to all of this data, how has it been used effectively in the past and an exact definition of the range of data that will be collected.
