Ms Vamvakinou’s electorate of Calwell is a culturally diverse community, with the largest Muslim community and largest intake of refugees across Victoria.
Ms Vamvakinou has voted for progressive reforms on immigration, gender and climate change.
She said in a speech, “we should be less tolerant of countries who do not implement their human rights obligations and who ignore UN resolutions on human rights abuses”.
Ms Vamvakinou is a member of the Human Rights Sub-Committee, leading the inquiry into whether Australia should adopt its own version of a Global Magnitsky Act. If this Committee recommends to Parliament that it should adopt such a law, the chances of it succeeding become much stronger!
