To the Implementation Committee of the UN ESPOO Convention, the Belgian Government, and to all concerned Governments in the European Union:

As concerned European citizens, we call on you to take all necessary steps to immediately carry out a trans-boundary environmental impact assessment under the EU’s EIA Directive and the UN’s Espoo Convention for all Belgian reactors. Until this crucial step is taken, the reactors in Doel and Tihange that are causing safety concerns due to the numerous leaks, cracks, and even sabotage attempts should be shut down. Public safety comes first.

Nuclear experts are scared. Belgium just restarted two ancient power plants, despite the discovery of 16,000 cracks last year in two of the reactors, and a recent explosion at another. They threaten to unleash another Chernobyl disaster right in the heart of Europe!

Last week nearly 900,000 European Avaazers won a campaign for Belgium to accept international inspectors, and got this dangerous story all over the media. Now, we have a chance to get a UN environmental impact body to act, and then get the sites shut down, until a full safety assessment is carried out.

Belgium is right now scrambling to respond. If we build the largest global call ever, we can set a precedent in Europe, and move to shut down dozens of hazardous nuclear plants across the world.
