Although New Zealand is small, their ability to work well with others could be the secret to building a strong alliance of countries to protect half the planet.
Prime Minister Ardern understands that the way we are treating our planet is threatening the future for all of us. So let’s write to her and inspire her to take up protecting half our earth as a rallying call for the world. Avaaz will collect all the amazing letters, print them in a beautiful book, and deliver them to her and her team.
Before you write - getting to know PM Ardern:
- Jacinda Ardern describes herself as a compassionate leader who wants to remake politics based on love and respect for others. She says we teach our kids to listen and respect each other, but that these traits aren’t valued by our politicians!
- She has been breaking the glass ceiling since day one -- not only is she the youngest woman leader on the planet, but she is also one of only 2 women leaders to have a baby while in power.
- Her daughter's given name is Neve Te Aroha. Neve is an anglicised form of the Irish name Niamh, meaning "bright"; Aroha is Māori for "love", and Te Aroha is a mountain in the Kaimai Range, near Jacinda's home town of Morrinsville.
- She took her 3 month year old daughter to the United Nations General Assembly, the biggest global political event of the year. She nursed and changed nappies in between meetings.
- She’s the real deal - her former high school teacher says: “There’s not a public, private, or political persona. There’s just Jacinda.”
- The daughter of a police officer and a school-cafeteria worker, she grew up just south of Auckland in the Waikato region. As a side business, her parents cultivated apples and pears for export. Ardern would help out on the tractor after school.
- She was raised Mormon, but left the church in her 20s because of its attitude toward LGBTQ people. But she told the press that she has no hard feelings toward religious people in general.
- When the public questioned her ability to have a baby and run a country at the same time she responded "I am not the first woman to multitask! I am not the first woman to work and have a baby. I know these are special circumstances, but there are many women who have done this well before I have".
- Just a few weeks ago, she called world leaders to act on climate change and be “on the right side of history.”
