How French President Macron can help save life on Earth
The Paris climate agreement showed that France is a country that knows how to lead others. And this year their President, Emmanuel Macron, is hosting several key meetings that can put protecting nature at the top of the global political agenda.

If President Macron joins the call to protect half of our earth, other world leaders will follow. Let’s write to him and inspire him to support this plan. Avaaz will collect all the amazing letters, print them in a beautiful book, and deliver them to him and his team!

Before you write - getting to know President Macron:

  1. Macron is a trailblazer - elected aged 39, he is the youngest French President in history. And when asked on the election trail if he was too young to lead he responded “The argument that I am 38 is not an argument … Are you better qualified to understand the current world at 70?”.
  2. He is entrepreneurial. Macron created a new political party in France called En Marche. It rapidly rose to power in the last election, against the predictions of many political pundits. And won with 66% of the vote. Many saw its success was largely down to Macron’s understanding of social media as a way of connection people.
  3. Macron is active and enjoys outdoor pursuits like skiing. He must have felt the magic of mountains in his life. People say he’s also an accomplished pianist.
  4. Although his family was not religious, when Macron was 12 he asked to be baptised catholic. And recently he met with the Pope, another leader who believes we must protect our common home (earth) and be stewards of nature.
  5. He wants to be a global environmental statesman! After the decision of the US to leave the Paris Agreement on Climate, Macron launched an initiative called “Make Our Planet Great Again” - calling researchers and students, entrepreneurs, associations and NGOs, students and all civil society to mobilize and join France to lead the fight to save the planet.
  6. Macron is not afraid to fight for what he believes. He announced that France will no longer accept commercial agreements with countries that do not “respect” the Paris Climate Agreement, and has already said he could do this if Brazil’s new president cuts down the Amazon rainforest.
  7. Macron is under pressure - despite a promising start, he’s facing protests and a dip in popularity. He is traveling the country to talk to the public and see what he can do to improve - saving nature could be the thing!
