They are the biggest funder of international environmental projects, they are hosting the European meeting which will decide how the EU engages with this, and they have a close relationship with China, who will host the global nature summit.
Chancellor Merkel is preparing to leave office after her current term, so she has a chance to make a global deal for nature part of her legacy. - Forbes has named her the most powerful woman on the planet ten times. She was also named the Time person of the year, with her cover photo terming her the "Chancellor of the Free World”.
- German supporters call her "Mutti" (mother) in a friendly way.
- She is a scientist. As a child she was excellent in mathematics, then went on to study physics and has a doctorate in quantum chemistry. Some say her success as a politician comes from her scientific, analytic approach to situations.
- She has a unique taste for good cinema; her favorite movie is "The Legend of Paul and Paula" a love story between a middle-class bureaucrat and Paula, a grocery store cashier. When asked about the film she proudly says she was overwhelmed by the mix of real life and poetry in the movie.
