They are the biggest funder of international environmental projects, they are hosting the European meeting which will decide how the EU engages with this, and they have a close relationship with China, who will host the global nature summit.

Chancellor Merkel is preparing to leave office after her current term, so she has a chance to make a global deal for nature part of her legacy. 4. She is a scientist. As a child she was excellent in mathematics, then went on to study physics and has a doctorate in quantum chemistry. Some say her success as a politician comes from her scientific, analytic approach to situations.
5. She has a unique taste for good cinema; her favorite movie is "The Legend of Paul and Paula" a love story between a middle-class bureaucrat and Paula, a grocery store cashier. When asked about the film she proudly says she was overwhelmed by the mix of real life and poetry in the movie.
