Rwanda's neighbour

To President Nkurunziza, and all other authorities in Burundi:

As concerned global citizens, we call on you to ensure a peaceful return to democracy in your country. We call for the end of violence and intimidation, the postponement of elections, the end of the third-term candidacy, the reopening of communication networks, and the release of protesters who have been kept in arbitrary detention. We stand for a hopeful, peaceful Burundi.

Rwanda's neighbour
Armed militia threatening to kill Tutsi refugees, 100,000 fleeing across the border. This isn’t Rwanda 1994, it’s neighbouring Burundi today. The tiny country is on the brink of civil war and the days to come will determine its fate -- we can help Burundi’s leaders choose peace, and hope.

When Burundi’s President announced he would seek an illegal third term, it set off country-wide protests that peaked in a failed coup last week. In response President Nkrunziza fired several ministers to consolidate power and his youth militia have threatened mass murder in refugee camps.

Burundi is spiraling out of control, but local religious and traditional leaders have the legitimacy and power to stop communal violence. Right now they’re hesitant to stand alone for peace, but if we stand with them we can give them a shield of protection and the support they need. Nearly 20 years ago, Rwanda plunged into horrific violence because the world failed to see it in time. If enough of us see this, and call for peace, we can help stop it this time.
