An Oil "Capo" as next EU Climate Commissioner? Time to stop it!

To the leaders of the Social Democrats and Liberal parties in the EU Parliament:

As concerned EU citizens, we call on you to show true climate leadership and make sure your political groups reject the appointment of Miguel Arias Cañete as the next Energy and Climate Change Commissioner. His deep ties to the oil industry and his appalling record as Spain’s environment minister make him unsuitable for the job, while creating a huge conflict of interest. Instead we urge to find a strong leader capable of putting the EU on the path towards a clean energy future.

An Oil "Capo" as next EU Climate Commissioner? Time to stop it!
In a shocking move, our political leaders are about to surrender the EU's most important climate job to a well-known "capo" in the oil industry -- we have literally days to stop this crazy appointment.

The financial interests of the man lined up to become the next Commisioner for Energy and Climate Change, Spaniard Arias Cañete, and his family spread over several oil enterprises. And as a former environment minister, he greenlighted the use of destructive drilling methods to extract fossil fuels, including oil explorations in the pristine waters off the Canary Islands.

In days, the EU Parliament could reject Cañete's candidacy, but key leaders of the Social Democrats and Liberals seem willing to give him their blessing to protect narrow party interests. Now only a massive protest across the EU can force them to reconsider their position and find a suitable candidate to lead Europe's climate action over the next crucial years. Sign the petition and tell everyone -- Avaaz will deliver it with a spectacular stunt in Brussels when we reach 300,000 signatures.
