Bangladesh - Stop Child Marriages!
To Bangladesh Honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Bangladesh's international donors:
As global citizens concerned about the high rates of child marriage in Bangladesh, we call on the Bangladesh government and its international donors to ensure that the legal age for marriage in Bangladesh is not lowered from 18 to 16 and the Child Marriage Restraint Act is strengthened and strictly enforced. We urge you to empower different government agencies and NGOs to act together to ensure girls are educated and empowered, and not forced into early marriage.

The country’s female leader Sheikh Hasina pledged last year to drastically reduce these figures. But a year on, she’s simply fudging the legal age, cutting it by two years, so Bangladesh can get a glowing report card from the UN!
Hasina cares about her international image, especially ahead of a UN global poverty summit in weeks -- if a million of us back Bangladeshi groups’ call to tackle the real causes of the child bride epidemic, we can use ads, pickets and protests when she arrives in New York to change her mind.
