Polluted Barcelona -- a change of air is in your hands!

To Ada Colau, Mayor of Barcelona and President of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona:

95% of the population of Barcelona is exposed to annual air pollution levels which exceed health protection limits, systematically failing to comply with the European law. For this reason, during the present mandate, we request the implementation of a Congestion Charge and/or a Low Emission Zone in Barcelona that limit access to the most polluting vehicles, especially diesel vehicles, focussing mainly on private vehicles and motorbikes (users who can change their mobility habits to more sustainable ones).

Polluted Barcelona -- a change of air is in your hands!

Barcelona is the European city with the highest density of vehicles per km2. This means that it has double the pollution of cities like Paris or London and it currently is one of the 5 most polluted cities in Europe. In the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona, pollution causes 3,500 premature deaths a year and illnesses like asthma, bronquitis, and pulmonary emphysemas, cardiac problems, strokes, kidney diseases and different types of cancer. It is currently the main public health risk in the city.

Lisbon, London, Athens, Milan, Stockholm, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, Rotterdam, Rome... More than 230 European cities have already applied measures to reduce traffic with satisfactory results. Their experience demonstrates that it is simply not enough to have a good public transport system. It is necessary to obstruct the circulation of private vehicles applying two measures: a Congestion Charge and a Low Emission Zone where access to the most polluting vehicles is limited, especially diesel, with the exception of vehicles for the disabled, goods vehicles or public service vehicles such as taxis and buses.

In Barcelona, as it happened with the anti tobacco law, we are lagging behind. We need the determination of politicians to prioritize health over other interests.

Barcelona is ready, now we need political action. Sign for the global right to breathe a clean air!
