There’s one thing all these stories have in common: They’re fake. Untrue. Made up. Lies.
That image above is from Madrid, Spain -- not from Yellow Vests protests in France. But it was titled as if it was, and shared over a hundred thousand times. Doctored videos of rigged voting machines in Brazil reached over 16 million. After the rumours of kidnappers spread on Whatsapp, angry mobs in India killed picnic goers and elderly women selling chocolate.
What makes such lies so incredibly toxic is that with social media they spread to millions within hours. And even worse? Only a tiny number of us EVER gets told that we have seen fake news. Lies that often have the aim to break our trust in democracy or our fellow humans.
But Avaaz has consulted long and deep with academics and social media executives, and we’ve found a simple solution to this massive problem: Distribute corrections to fake news. To everyone who has seen them. Verified by independent fact-checkers. Issued directly via social media.
So why don’t Facebook and other social media platforms do this? Likely because they don’t want all their users to see how much fake information flies around on their platforms -- but we have gotten these tech giants to act before, and we can do it again. Sign now -- once we reach 1 million, we’ll put up real billboards outside Facebook’s headquarters with the biggest fake news on their platforms. Until they listen!
