EU: Healthy meals for our school children

To EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Stella Kyriakides, to the European Commission and the EU member states:

We urge you to enforce healthy school meals and nutritional literacy for every child, in every school in the EU, as the minimum standard for the EU Farm to Fork strategy. Every child has the right to a balanced diet for a healthy development and to be able to participate in class with focus. Healthy school meals are beneficial for both people and the environment. Paired with nutritional literacy, school children can learn to eat and cook healthily - while using food responsibly. Thus, schools become hubs for sustainable nutrition. Small plate, big impact!

EU: Healthy meals for our school children

More than 20% of people in the EU are at risk of poverty. Every fourth child is affected. The covid crisis has driven poverty levels to an all-time high -- and now prices are skyrocketing because of inflation.

For many families, there is simply not enough money at the moment -- not even for healthy food for their children.

But now there is a momentum in the EU: The Commission and EU member states could soon ensure that every child in every school in the EU receives a healthy, sustainably produced lunch and that the youngest are taught early-on about what constitutes a balanced diet.

Let’s ramp up the pressure and make our demands clear: We insist that children should not be sitting in school on an empty stomach - we demand access to healthy, balanced meals for everyone. Join in now.
