As citizens horrified by Putin’s war against Ukraine, we urge you to meet this moment by preventing disinformation-fuelled harm to people in Ukraine, Russia and around the world. Now is the moment to fully detox your algorithms. We call on all social media platforms to end the amplification and monetisation of disinformation and hate speech. We urge regulators to turn this into a legal requirement. This war should be a turning point for social media – we count on platforms and lawmakers to act now.

The first shots fired on Ukraine weren’t bullets – they were lies. For years, the Kremlin spread news of false Ukrainian attacks, baseless conspiracies, and non-existent hate crimes to terrorize Ukrainians and escalate tensions internationally. But now we have a chance to fight back.
