Pratidin Time: Do news, not abuse!
To Jayanta Baruah, chairman of Pratidin Group:
We are disgusted by the recent "news" report aired by Pratidin Time shaming women exercising their freedom. This kind of harassment normalises a culture of violence against women in India and across the world, and such conduct by a media channel cannot be met with impunity. We call on you to ensure an immediate apology aired on Pratidin Time during primetime hours, the resignation of the journalist Hemen Rangbonshi and editor Nitumoni Saikia responsible for this report, gender-rights training for all staff and a commitment by the channel to cover the routine violence that women in Assam face.

After a storm of outrage -- they’ve taken the clip off their website. Issuing a half-hearted apology, the editor still lashed out against women's freedom, saying: ‘Some things will never be a part of or welcomed into Assamese society.’
Groups in Assam are mobilising for action -- let’s join in and call on the channel to broadcast an apology immediately and force the resignation of the editor and journalist responsible for the report.
When the media itself engages in harassment of women, it is time to send a strong message that this is utterly unacceptable. Let’s get to 30,000 voices urgently!
