Egypt: A joke is not a crime

To Prosecutor General Talaat Abdullah:

We call on you put an immediate end to the joke of an investigation being carried out against Bassem Youssef. The rising trend in defamation cases will only turn the constitution into a weapon to silence the government's critics. Citizens across Egypt are looking to your leadership in reasserting the independence of the judiciary and defending freedom of speech for all.

Egypt: A joke is not a crime

It was meant to be a joke. Comedian Bassem Youssef hugging a pillow with Morsi’s face on it to show how affectionate the president is. But talk about humour failure! The government will now launch an investigation against Youssef.

But Prosecutor General Talaat Abdullah can throw out the senseless case against Youssef. After a difficult term where he almost quit, many say he’s eager to prove the independence of the judiciary -- if enough of us raise our voices now, we can convince him to stand up for Egypt’s hard-won freedoms, including the freedom to criticise those in power.

Youssef shot to fame by articulating the frustrations of millions across the Arab world -- let’s stand up for him by urging the Prosecutor General to drop the case against Youssef and end the rising trend in censorship once and for all. Sign now and share with all friends and family!
