End Police Impunity in Kenya

To President William Ruto and the Kenyan Parliament :

As a global community, we call upon you to reaffirm Kenya’s commitment to the rule of law by taking immediate action:

1. Prosecute and bring to justice the perpetrators and their commanders, who directed and executed the murder of innocent, peaceful protestors
2. Compensate the families of murdered victims, and those who suffered injuries and had their property destroyed
3. Prosecute those who sponsored the destruction of public property during the protests
4. Prosecute criminal elements that infiltrated the peaceful protests to facilitate looting and plunder of private property
5. Initiate a public inquiry to allow Kenyans to air their grievances and defuse the traumas they bear from the protests

End Police Impunity in Kenya
My name is Gillian Munyao, and I am the mother of Rex Masai. In June 2024, Kenyan security officers killed my son. Rex was 29 years old, and his whole life was ahead of him; he loved playing football and drawing and dreamt of becoming an architect.

He was the first of at least 65 young people killed while they were peacefully protesting a tax increase. Hundreds were injured or “disappeared”. Despite footage showing the faces of the perpetrators, one year has passed, and no one has been held to account for the death of our children. We can’t bring them back, but we can ensure that their deaths are not in vain.

On the first anniversary of impunity, we are exposing President William Ruto’s failure to act against forced disappearances, abductions, and deadly police violence—and rallying a global call for justice for the victims!

If enough of us join, Avaaz will launch hard-hitting ads calling him out for failing to act while our kids were dying on his streets. He cares about his image in the international community, so he won’t be able to ignore the pressure.
