To the President of the Committee for Prevention of Torture, Mr. Mykola Gnatovsky and all members of the CPT:

As global citizens deeply concerned with the wide crackdown in Turkey, we call on you to immediately dispatch independent monitors to the country and ensure that allegations of torture and inhumane treatment are fully investigated and the European anti-torture convention is upheld. Turkey's government clearly has a right to punish those responsible for the attempted coup, but those arrested must be able to defend themselves in an independent and legitimate court. As a preventive body, CPT can ensure that Turkey maintains the rule of law and human rights at this difficult and divisive time.

A cloud of fear hangs over Turkey as President Erdogan accelerates his brutal post-coup crackdown.

60,000 teachers, soldiers, judges and journalists have already been locked up or fired and thousands have disappeared in makeshift prisons while chilling evidence of beatings, rape and other forms of torture is surfacing.

A democratically elected government has every right to respond to those who sought to topple it by force, but if the punishment is disproportionate it could dangerously destabilise the country.

With a state of emergency in place, dozens of journalists under arrest and news sites blocked, the only way to stop the witch-hunt is to get monitors from the Committee for the Prevention of Torture on the ground fast.

Turkey is party to the European anti-torture convention, and the committee can dispatch monitors to ensure compliance. Let’s use our freedom to speak out and lift the veil on Turkey’s torture camps.
