Stop Online Misogyny!

To the EU Commission:

We are concerned EU citizens who are deeply worried about the staggering amount of misogynistic content being spoon-fed to our young people online. We urge you to equate extreme misogyny with terrorism and leverage existing mechanisms, regulatory and legislative frameworks to protect the health and safety of our youth, of women, and all EU citizens.

Stop Online Misogyny!
Adolescence, the Netflix series everyone is talking about, mirrors a shocking reality: online, boys are being taught to hate girls. And this hate rarely stays online. Last year, a 17-year-old killed three girls and wounded eight others during a dance class in the UK, after being radicalised online. Experts are seeing an epidemic of violence against women, fuelled by misogynistic content online.

Social media algorithms don’t just allow hateful content to spread: they amplify it. Over half of young people see online content fuelling hatred of women every single week.

The EU has a legislative framework in place that it could use to make social media giants stand up against this extremist content, but they’ll have to equate it with other forms of extremism. Let’s demand they do so — and make this stop. Join the urgent call now.
