A mass grave in the sea

To EU leaders:

As concerned citizens deeply saddened by the thousands of lives lost in the Mediterranean, we urge you to address this crisis before more innocent people drown while searching for safety from violence, persecution and war. We call on you to work with other EU leaders to immediately launch large-scale search and rescue operations with proactive patrolling as close to the Libyan shores as possible. We count on you to carry on Europe’s legacy as a human rights champion.

A mass grave in the sea
At least 700 people drowned this weekend while attempting to reach the shores of Italy. Their deaths are a tragic consequence of Europe’s determination to keep migrants out at all costs, but out of the horror there’s hope for a solution that could stop the crisis at the world's deadliest border.

The tragedy prompted EU leaders to announce an emergency summit this Thursday to find a solution. But these are the same leaders who pulled funding for a life-saving search and rescue operation in the Mediterranean. Only an immediate, large-scale search and rescue mission could stop the drownings, but for this to happen, these leaders need to hear it loud and clear from all of us before they meet in 2 days.

Those who drowned risked it all in unsafe boats to escape war, hunger, and extreme poverty. And the warmer weather means that thousands more are preparing to make the deadly trip. Let’s prevent another crisis by calling on EU heads of state to send the resources needed to save lives in the Mediterranean -- right now. Join the urgent call and when we reach 1 million, Avaaz will deliver our voices to the summit.
