Spain: Hours to stop illegal evictions
To the President of Spain, Mariano Rajoy, and the Vicepresident, Soraya Sáenz de Santamaría:
As citizens committed to social justice, we urge you to implement the ruling handed down by the Court of Justice of the European Union and immediately stop foreclosures until Congress passes new legislation to provide social housing and nonrecourse debt, as well as complying with EU legislation. It is time to put people's rights before bankers' profits.

Last week, the Court of Justice of the European Union concluded that Spanish mortgage law violates consumer protection and is breaching an EU directive that regulates clauses that are considered abusive. Some evictions are already being reconsidered, and the government is under enormous pressure to respond to the verdict from Europe. Let’s use this unique opportunity to call for illegal evictions to be immediately stopped, before banks find more excuses to throw people out of their homes.
A new mortgage law is already under discussion in Congress. The Council of Ministers meeting today is our best shot to force the government to pass legislation that issues an immediate moratorium on foreclosures. Sign the petition and spread the word to help us reach 200,000 signatures. Avaaz is working with Parliamentarians in the opposition so our public message will resonate loudly in the next hours.
