Europe: Keep Fighting on Climate

The US, Canada and Japan are trying to kill the Kyoto Protocol -- the only international legally binding treaty to reduce carbon pollution. European Environmental Ministers say they want to lead a strong push for Kyoto and getting in place a new binding agreement for all countries. But Heads of State consumed by the economic meltdown and concerned about splitting from the US are keeping Ministers’ hands tied. Only widespread public pressure will get climate back on the minds of leaders and persuade them to empower negotiators to fully save Kyoto and raise ambitions for a new global binding treaty with teeth in the future.
Merkel, Sarkozy and Cameron can stop runaway climate change by giving their negotiators a strong mandate to lead, get China and Brazil on board, and create a new green dream team to face down the Kyoto killers. But right now it will take all of us to ensure Europe rekindles its lasting legacy as an international champion and brokers this critical deal.
