Miiyah barely reached the boat in time. By the time she squeezed in next to her neighbors and their three dogs, the wall of smoke had swallowed her First Nations community in Canada.

Two weeks later and an ocean away, French villagers are living the same nightmare – forced to flee by sea as monstrous blazes block the roads.

As I write this, four continents are on fire. Firefighters are working beyond exhaustion, but they can’t always do it alone. And they don’t have to: governments have already committed to share crews and equipment across borders, and to pool efforts to stop fires before they start.

But these plans need immediate political commitment and financial support or they’ll do nothing to quench the flames. With France on fire, President Macron is under huge pressure to act – and that gives us a unique opportunity.
