To members of the Florida State Legislature:

We urge you to enact a no-exceptions ban on the practice of child marriage. As Americans from all over the US, we believe Florida can lead the rest of the country by example in ensuring that not a single child can be married before they reach adulthood, against their consent, and regardless of circumstances. The spotlight is on Florida, and we are counting on you to end this horrific practice.

Florida: Ban child marriage for good!
Sherry Johnson was raped at age 8, pregnant by 10, and forced to marry her rapist at 11.

That sounds like something that happened somewhere far away. But it happened in the US, where not a SINGLE state has banned the practice of child marriage. As of 2014, close to 60,000 children ages 15-17 around the US were married -- 25 states don't even set a minimum age!

For years Sherry has tirelessly pushed her elected officials to ban child marriage, and now we have an opportunity to back her and other survivors up. In days, her home state of Florida could vote for the nation’s first ever total statewide ban on child marriage -- but religious conservatives are trying to water it down.

This problem, and this moment, aren’t making big enough headlines. But if we raise our voices, we can not only help pass this bill, but ensure it kicks off a trend other states will follow. Add your name, and we’ll shine a national spotlight on Florida so we don’t lose our chance.
