To members of the Florida State Legislature:

We urge you to decisively pass SB 140 and enact a no-exceptions ban on the practice of child marriage. As Americans from all over the US, we believe Florida can lead the rest of the country by example in ensuring that not a single child can be married before they reach adulthood, against their consent, and regardless of circumstances. The spotlight is on Florida, and we are counting on you to end this horrific practice.

Florida: ban child marriage, NO exceptions!
Sherry Johnson was raped at age 8, pregnant by 10, and forced to marry her rapist at 11.

That sounds like something that happened somewhere far away. But it happened in the US, where NO STATES have fully banned child marriage. Tens of thousands of children are in marriages across the country -- frequently, young girls married to older men without their consent.

But as soon as next week, Sherry’s home state of Florida could vote for the nation’s first ever total statewide ban on child marriage. Advocates and survivors who have worked on this issue for years say a no-exceptions ban is exactly what we need to show other states how to tackle this problem.

This vote could create major momentum for the rest of the country -- but some lawmakers are pushing for “shotgun wedding” exceptions that would still leave kids vulnerable to forced marriages. Sign now to put Florida in the national spotlight to make sure they have the courage to pass this bill, NO exceptions!
