Morocco: Free Betty

To Mohammed VI, King of Morocco and António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations:

The prosecution and imprisonment of Ibtissame “Betty” Lachgar for peaceful expression violates Morocco’s human rights obligations and constitutes arbitrary punishment against dissent, feminist activism, and LGBTI+ rights. We demand you to act for her immediate release and urgent medical care.

Morocco: Free Betty
Betty is behind bars in Morocco, simply for wearing a t-shirt the regime did not like. She has bone cancer, and doctors warn that without urgent surgery, she could face amputation. Yet, the authorities rejected her numerous requests for emergency surgery.

This is not inevitable. The King can grant a royal pardon. International pressure already won a royal pardon for Hajar Raissouni, who had been sentenced to a year for an abortion. And after the biggest nationwide protests since the Arab Spring, authorities are even more keen to polish their international image.

Now global attention could help save Betty. Add your name to demand her immediate release and urgent medical care.
