As concerned citizens from around the globe we strongly urge you to grant Tommy and other animals like him non-human personhood status. Intelligent, emotional animals are not "things" -- and we urge you to let Tommy spark the change greatly needed to start classifying these incredible beings as legal persons who deserve rights.

Locked up in a tiny cell, Tommy spends his days completely alone, with nothing but a TV. He’s in his mid-thirties, and has been tortured and imprisoned most of his life. His crime: being born with 1.1% of the wrong DNA -- and for that, he’s considered a “thing.”

The truth is, he is very similar to us. He has feelings as any other person -- gets depressed when he’s lonely, can have long-lasting friendships, and can even communicate with sign-language. Tommy doesn’t deserve all the suffering he has been forced to live.

Now a tiny legal team is taking his case to an American court to recognise Tommy as a legal person instead of a “thing”-- giving him fundamental rights that would set him free, and set a precedent for other animals like him.

Join the call to free Tommy and when enough of us act, Avaaz will submit our names in a legal filing to the judge.
