Food safety standards in the US really are the stuff of nightmares. Beef and pork pumped full of hormones, chlorinated chicken, “tolerable” amounts of rat faeces in everything from wheat to chocolate.

It’s not something you’d ever eat by choice - but soon, you might not have much of a choice.

That’s because Starmer is desperate for a trade deal with Trump, and White House officials are said to have a red line about opening up “agri-food” sectors. That would mean British supermarkets flooded with this sort of revolting produce.
