As administrators of justice and guardians of the rule of law in our country, we respectfully call on you to uphold your independence in the important decision on the "legittimo impedimento". We are alarmed by the growing political pressure placed on your constitutional responsibilities and call on you to preserve the autonomy and independence of the constitutional body you are members of, and in doing so defend of our democracy.

UPDATE: The Constitutional Court has partially rejected the law. Let's be ready in the upcoming months to defend the autonomy of judges!

On Thursday our Constitutional Court will decide whether Berlusconi can be granted immunity from prosecution while in office.

Dogged by charges on embezzlement, false accounting and tax fraud, the Prime Minister and his allies are putting enormous pressure on the members of the Court in a shameful attempt to influence their decision and ensure a ruling that puts him above the law.

Only a massive public outcry can counter this political intimidation, and ensure our judges uphold the rule of law. Let's stand in support of the Constitutional Court's independence and protect our democracy.
