Rio: keep Aldeia Maracanã safe!

To the Governor of Rio de Janeiro Sergio Cabral and City Mayor Eduardo Paes:

As concerned Brazilians across the country, we urge you to stop immediately the unnecessary eviction and demolition of the former Museu do Indio near the Maracanã stadium. The legacy of Brazil’s indigenous people should be kept alive, not put aside for the World Cup, a one off sporting event.

Rio: keep Aldeia Maracanã safe!
The Governor of Rio Sergio Cabral ordered the demolition of a 150 year-old iconic building near Maracanã - which will evict 17 indigenous groups - to make way for more space for cars - but they are resisting, and we can help them protect this unique cultural treasure.

Disregarding technical reports by the historical heritage agency, that said the building could not be demolished, Mayor Eduardo Paes authorized to put it down. The elite squad was sent to place to evict the indigenous communities, but they resisted, saying they won’t let this symbol of indigenous resistance become dust to plea FIFA. Two People can stop this: Mayor Paes and Governor Cabral, but they would only do so if public opinion show them our history matters more than parking space.

The Public Ministry and public defenders are trying to avoid the demolition/eviction at the judiciary -- if we stand behind them in a massive outcry now, our voices will be heard by mayor Paes and governor Cabral and they could change their mind and let Aldeia Maracanã stand aside the Maracanã stadium. Sign the petition and we will delivery it directly to the mayor’s cabinet!
