Tell Japan: don't sink our climate, clean up these dirty ships

To Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Taro Kono, and Minister of Transport, Mr. Keiichi Ishii :

Maritime shipping impacts the health of our seas, our air and our climate. As citizens from every country in the world, we call on you to bring the world’s ships in line with the Paris Climate Agreement. Technology exists today to transition to a 100% clean shipping fleet by 2050. It is only your level of ambition that will either hold this advancement back or spur it forward. The world and everything we love is counting on your leadership this week.

Tell Japan: don't sink our climate, clean up these dirty ships
If the shipping industry was a country, it would be the 6th largest climate polluter in the world! But this week, we can win a plan to stop these ships belching deadly smog into our skies.

Ministers from around the world are negotiating a cleanup plan to scale up existing green technology, but it will be Japan that makes or breaks the deal.

We've moved Japan before on climate -- let's do it again -- take a moment to send a message to Transport Minister Keiichi Ishii to encourage him to use Japan's position as a leading shipping nation, and its role as chair of this week's talks to get the agreement the world needs.

Use the message box on the right. You may want to adapt some of the points below, but the more personal the message the better!
  • As chair of this week's marine environment meeting, I call on you to agree a strong global plan to clean up shipping
  • With the signs of climate change all around us, we urgently need emission reduction targets based on science and in line with the Paris Agreement.
  • I look forward to you announcing a successful result that can help keep us and our children safe.
