Stop the backsliding of women's rights in Afghanistan
To President Hamid Karzai and the Chair of the Legislative Committee in the Mesherano Jirga, Malawi Ghulam Muhiuddin Monsef:
As concerned citizens, we are shocked that Sahar Gul’s tormentors were allowed to evade their 10-year sentence and walk free. International agreements which you have signed call upon Afghanistan to improve the rule of law. We urge you therefore to immediately abandon the dangerous proposed changes in the criminal procedure code that would prevent relatives from appearing as witnesses.

Her attackers’ sentence was reduced to one year, and now they’re free again! And, worse, the Lower House of Parliament just passed a bill that would ban victims’ family members testifying in court. This would prevent countless children and women from getting justice.
