End Police Impunity in Kenya

To President William Ruto and the Kenyan Parliament :

As a global community, we call upon you to reaffirm Kenya’s commitment to the rule of law by taking immediate action:

1. Prosecute and bring to justice the perpetrators and their commanders, who directed and executed the murder of innocent, peaceful protestors
2. Compensate the families of murdered victims, and those who suffered injuries and had their property destroyed
3. Prosecute those who sponsored the destruction of public property during the protests
4. Prosecute criminal elements that infiltrated the peaceful protests to facilitate looting and plunder of private property
5. Initiate a public inquiry to allow Kenyans to air their grievances and defuse the traumas they bear from the protests

End Police Impunity in Kenya
My name is Boniface Mwangi, and I was there.

On that day in June 2024, I stood among a sea of young Kenyans peacefully demanding a better future. What started as a hopeful protest against an unjust tax policy quickly turned into something else — something horrifying. Without warning, the air filled with tear gas, bullets, and screams. I watched people scatter. I saw young lives fall.

At least 65 were killed. Some were shot in the back while running. Others were beaten, abducted, or “disappeared.” Hundreds were injured. Families still haven’t found their children. And despite video evidence showing the faces of the perpetrators, none of the murderers have been arrested. Not one.

Now, on the first anniversary of this massacre, we are coming together — survivors, families, and witnesses — to demand justice from President William Ruto. We are calling out his failure to hold his security forces accountable and pushing for an end to the violent impunity that continues to plague Kenya. He may ignore his people, but he won’t ignore global pressure — especially when his international image is on the line.

If enough of us raise our voices, Avaaz will launch powerful international ads calling out his inaction. We’ve seen before how global solidarity can force leaders to act — and with your help, we can make sure these young lives are not forgotten, and not in vain.
