I’m Bert Wander, Avaaz’s CEO.
I want to share a bit about the magic of Avaaz.
Every day, millions of people who might otherwise never meet each other come together to protect our planet, defend our freedoms, save lives, and stand with communities facing impossible odds.
From helping deliver life-saving aid to conflict zones, to fighting for democracy, to protecting the Amazon alongside Indigenous communities, this movement keeps proving that people power can change the course of history.
And here's the incredible thing: everything we do, every penny we raise, and every campaign we run is powered by millions of Avaaz members around the world.
That means we’re 100% independent. No big donors calling the shots. No political interests pulling the strings. We’re free to focus on what matters to our members -- and nothing else.
Every year we ask Avaaz members what we should prioritise. Here’s what they want us to focus on:
- Saving lives, building peace and defending freedom – We’re running major campaigns in Palestine and Sudan to stand in solidarity with those caught in war and humanitarian crisis.
- Protecting the living Earth – We’re standing with Indigneous leaders to defend the Amazon, standing with Vanuatu’s fight for groundbreaking climate accountability, and fighting to block the world’s worst oil pipeline project in East Africa.
- Building people power for the world we want – We’re building a global vision of a thriving future, expanding into new platforms like Whatsapp, and making sure our campaigns are ‘for’ something, not just ‘against’ something.
