Free Luaty Beirão & the Angola 15!

To Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Rui Jorge Carneiro Mangueira & General Prosecutor, João Maria Moreira de Sousa:

As concerned global citizens, we urge you to release the “Angola 15” immediately and ensure they are not subjected to torture or other ill-treatment. We also call on Angolan authorities to end the practice of arbitrary arrests, harassment and intimidation of activists, and uphold the right to freedom of association, assembly and expression.

Free Luaty Beirão & the Angola 15!
Arrested without charge, then thrown in solitary confinement without trial. His crime? Daring to discuss democracy in Angola. Now Luaty Beirão has been on hunger strike for almost a month and is in critical condition. He’s become a hero to his people -- a symbol of those standing up for freedom -- but unless we intervene he may soon become a martyr.

Authorities are seeking to crush local outrage over the arrest of Beirão and the 14 other men jailed alongside him, with police threatening to unleash water cannons and canines on those attending prayer vigils. But the Angolan Government cares about its global image and is urgently seeking loans to plug its huge budget deficit -- this is our opening.

Together we can sound a massive outcry that threatens the country's image, then pressure potential lenders like the IMF and the U.S. not to release any funds until the Government first releases the men.

Let's follow Luaty Beirão’s example of bravery and determination before it’s too late -- sign now.
