Honouring Nelson Mandela

To world leaders, the United Nations and fellow citizens:

We have lost a great inspiration, but Mandela's message of hope and public service lives within all of us. The United Nations has already declared Mandela's birthday to be an international day of public service. We pledge to honour his legacy, and call on you to make Mandela Day the first ever universally-observed global public day, where citizens in every country are encouraged to come together in shared commitment and service.

Today, world leaders are mourning the passing of Nelson Mandela in South Africa. And if we act now, we can make sure their visit ends in a firm decision to uphold his legacy.

Mandela's Foundation and the United Nations have established Mandela Day as a day of public service to honour him. Mandela wanted people to remember by spending a day in public service for a better world. If we can right now get every world leader attending his memorial to agree to celebrate this day, we could help create the first global public service day and literally set a new precedent of global unity and cooperation.

Mandela's sacrifices and leadership changed our world. Let's seize this chance when so many of our world leaders are together reflecting on his life to create something that honours his legacy, and will give our great-grandchildren a way to participate in it. Click to sign the petition for Mandela Day -- it will be delivered to leaders in South Africa.
