Restore peace and democracy in Myanmar

To leaders of ASEAN member states:

As concerned citizens in Asia and across the world, we urge you to take the following actions to help restore peace and democracy in Myanmar: grant the National Unity Government formed by the elected and pro-democracy officials a seat at the negotiating table, and appoint an ASEAN envoy to visit Myanmar. When necessary, use punitive measures such as coordinated sanctions to end the mass violence.

Restore peace and democracy in Myanmar
Myanmar’s 10-year old democracy was taken away, along with hundreds of civilian lives when the military junta arrested elected officials and took power earlier this year -- and now Myanmar is on the brink of turning into a failed society.

The young democracy might not have lasted long, but the people’s determination lives on. Brave protesters are facing deadly crackdowns to fight for democracy -- now it’s time for the world to step up for peace and democracy in Myanmar.

The leader of Myanmar’s coup is about to attend a major regional summit in Jakarta where countries will discuss the crisis in Myanmar. This is a unique opportunity for Southeast Asian leaders to send a clear message to the junta that violence against civilians is unacceptable. Join the global call for peace and democracy in Myanmar -- when enough of us sign, Avaaz will place ads in Jakarta to “welcome” the General’s visit for the summit.

Since the coup took place in February, countries including the US, UK and EU members have taken action to pressure the junta to shift course. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, as a regional coalition consisting of Myanmar and 9 other Southeast Asian countries, has a crucial role to play to convince the coup leaders to stop the bloodshed.

Restoring peace and democracy in Myanmar is not just the right thing to do -- it’s also crucial for the region’s stability and prosperity. Let's sure our leaders do the right thing!
