USDA: People before profits
To the USDA, EPA, and President Obama:
As concerned citizens, we urge you to reject the use of 2,4-D resistant crops, as well as the use of 2,4-D as an herbicide. This harmful chemical has been linked to many health conditions like cancer and birth defects, and also has environmental consequences on surrounding areas. It’s time to start putting people and the environment before big companies who profit from unsustainable solutions.

This toxic herbicide, known as 2,4-D, makes up half the mixture of the dangerous defoliant Agent Orange used in Vietnam. Since then it’s been linked to birth defects, cancer, and parkinsons disease to name a few. The government has two decision two make -- one to approve the herbicide itself, and one to approve crops which are resistant to it. They could decide in just weeks, but the USDA is currently holding a public consultation about it before making their final decision. 50 members of congress have already urged the USDA to reject this -- let’s join their call by flooding them with messages before the consultation period ends.
Exposure studies show that levels of 2,4-D end up being higher in young children, and there are thousands of elementary schools surrounding farms where 2,4-D could be sprayed which puts them at greatest risk of harm. Send the USDA an urgent message now -- we have just days left to act.
