Stop Beijing’s “sportswashing” Games!
To NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell, BBC Director-General Tim Davie, ARD chairman Tom Buhrow, CBC CEO Catherine Tait and other Beijing 2022 broadcasters and Olympic Games sponsors:
As citizens across the world concerned about the human rights conditions in China, we urge you to cancel your plan to broadcast or sponsor the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, and refrain from broadcasting any Chinese state-sponsored footage to cover up the crimes committed in Xinjiang. We also call on you to use your leverage as major funders of the Games to press Chinese authorities to publicly affirm media and religious freedom during the Games. We pledge not to watch any broadcast of the Games or to support the sponsors of Beijing 2022. It is time everyone does their part for human rights.

A business-as-usual Olympics in Beijing would be allowing the Chinese authorities to get away with the crimes against humanity they’ve committed. Meanwhile, TV networks are paying BILLIONS of dollars to broadcast the Games. Those deals are the Olympic Games’ main funding sources, and it gives the broadcasters immense leverage to help make a difference.
These companies won’t take action unless there’s a big enough outcry from their audience. Let us get A MILLION people to pledge not to watch any of these broadcasts and show the broadcasters, ad buyers and sponsors of the Games that dealing with Beijing's “sportswashing” tactics is not good business. Pledge today and Avaaz will deliver our messages to the company HQs, and call on them to pull out from bloody Beijing 2022!
