As citizens from all around the world, we are outraged by the DRC government attack on Panzi hospital. The government should help the hospital rather than ask it to pay huge taxes or freeze its accounts so it can continue treating survivors of sexual violence. We call on the EU to exert all its influence on the DRC to end the pressure on Panzi hospital.

The Democratic Republic of Congo government has done little to stop warring factions rape huge numbers of girls and women, and now it’s making life impossible for the hospital which is helping tens of thousands of survivors get back on their feet.

The government first slapped a massive tax bill on the Panzi Hospital, and then froze the hospital’s bank accounts to stop doctors and nurses getting paid or buying supplies. We can stop this outrageous bid to tax rape victims by getting the European Union to weigh in fast.

The EU just gave the hospital’s founder a prestigious human rights prize, and its massive aid funding guarantees a seat at the DRC government’s top table.
