Palestinian Lives Matter: Giant monument for Gaza in Brussels

*** Over 4,500 pairs of shoes, one for every life lost in the Israel-Palestine conflict over the last decade, setup right outside the EU Foreign Ministers’ meeting ***

WHERE: Place Jean Rey, 1000 Brussels (behind the building of the Council of the European Union)
WHEN: Monday. May 28, from 08:30 am CET until 12:30 noon.

Ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting at 09.30am, Avaaz members are bringing the Gaza tragedy to the Council’s doorstep, right in front of where ministers enter the building - with a monument of over 4,500 pairs of shoes, one pair for every life lost in this conflict in the last decade.

The shoe installation represents those who can’t march anymore. In less than a week, over 425.000 EU citizens have signed a global petition calling on world leaders and foreign affairs ministers to sanction key Israeli industries until Palestinians are granted full and equal civil rights. For reference, please see our campaign here. Citizens from across the EU donated their own shoes for this striking memorial. An Avaaz spokesperson will be available on the ground.

Contact: to coordinate interviews or film the preparations of the installation, please email media@avaaz.org. To receive the latest updates of this activity in real time, please text René Engel at 0049 151 6512 8526 (we might include you in a WhatsApp group just for this occasion).

Avaaz did similar installations before, and they made headlines around the world - both after the terrorist attacks in Paris and to raise awareness about the lives lost to gun violence in the US (photos).
