Protect the forests and their defenders
To Cambodia's Minister of Environment Say Samal:
As citizens concerned about illegal logging worldwide and in Cambodia we urge you use your power to protect your country's natural resources and people by working with communities to save newly protected forests, especially Prey Lang. We call on you to meet with community leaders directly affected and put in place effective co-management systems. Urge your colleagues in the government to uphold the right to protect the environment and to take strong steps to stop armed forces moonlighting for private companies.

The lungs of the world are being depleted -- and Cambodia is losing its forests at a faster rate than any other country. Those who stand in the way of the powerful interests behind the chainsaws risk being jailed, often on trumped-up charges. And worse, just weeks ago, a prominent activist was gunned down in broad daylight.
If nothing happens, both Cambodia's forests and its activists will be annihilated.
But it's not too late: With crucial local elections round the corner, the governing party is increasingly sensitive to people calling for more and better forest protection. Environment Minister Say Samal, who cares about his international reputation, has already expanded a protected area, and with a huge wave of support now, we can empower him to go further and save Cambodia's forests.
