Close All Big Cat Jails
To South African Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen and Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries Dr Dion George:
As global citizens with a love for wildlife, we commend the South African government for its commitment to closing the captive lion industry. Building on that success, we urge you to immediately develop a concrete phase-out plan with clear timelines, and to expand the ban to other big cats, including tigers, cheetahs, leopards and jaguars.

South Africa has over 8,000 lions living in captivity, the largest captive lion population in the world. It is great news that the government wants to ban these “lion jails”. But tigers, cheetahs, leopards and jaguars also need this protection - otherwise, there is a risk that they end up being a replacement for lions.
Conservation groups calling for protecting ALL big cats are asking the Avaaz community to help make their roar louder. So let’s join the call to push South Africa one step further, and when our pride of voices is large enough, we’ll deliver our roar straight to the government!
