Her life hanging by a thread

Leader of the Islamic Republic Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei, President Hassan Rouhani, and Foreign Affairs Minister of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif:

As concerned global citizens, we call on you to use all powers at your disposal to halt the execution of Reyhaneh Jabbari, and to press for a retrial in proceedings which comply with fair trial standards, without recourse to the death penalty, to investigate allegations that Reyhaneh Jabbari was ill-treated in custody, and to allow the accused access to a lawyer of her own choosing.

Her life hanging by a thread
UPDATE 10/26: Despite a global outcry, and calls for a new, fair trial by Amnesty International and other human rights defenders, Reyhaneh Jabbari was executed in Iran on Saturday October 25. Many thanks to all who took action to spread the word about her heartbreaking case. More information here.

| An Iranian woman who fought back against her attempted rapist is now fighting for her life -- and a social media campaign to stop her execution has the government scrambling. If we all add our voices to the outrage in Iran, right now we have a shot at stopping the hanging of Reyhaneh Jabbari.

When Reyhaneh Jabbari, a student and budding interior designer, met a man she thought was a potential client, he locked her in an apartment and tried to rape her. While attempting to escape she stabbed him once, but that was only the beginning of the nightmare: she was arrested, put in solitary confinement, tortured, and sentenced to death. Last month her hanging seemed imminent, but then something remarkable happened: when her mother was told to pick up her body the next day, she shared her plea on social media -- and it quickly went viral. A day later, the government postponed the execution.

We’ve made waves in Iran before -- our raucous campaign once helped stop the execution of Sakineh Ashtiani, whose sentence to death by stoning caused outrage worldwide. Let’s do it again -- when we get to a critical mass we’ll display massive portraits of Reyhaneh at Iranian consulates worldwide, and work with her mother and other advocates to publicize this global call.
