Save the Humboldt penguins

To Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet and the Chilean government::

As concerned global citizens, we urge you to declare the “Comuna La Higuera” a Marine Protected Area for Multiple Uses, and take the necessary additional measures to promote sustainable fishing, agriculture and tourism in this region. By creating such a safe haven, you will not only help save 80% of the endangered Humboldt penguins and hundreds of vulnerable species, but also contribute to protecting our global oceans for generations to come.

Save the Humboldt penguins
Eighty percent (!!) of the endangered Humboldt penguins are threatened by a project to build a huge open-pit mine and a port in the pristine waters off La Higuera in Chile.

The good news is that last year, conservationists and locals pushed key Ministers to put the plan on ice -- but the mining company is fighting tooth and nail to get its way.

Now there is a no-brainer plan to protect these smart, less-than-a-meter tall creatures, and our community can help make it real.

Outgoing President Bachelet is an international conservation champion, and a surge of global citizen encouragement can supercharge local efforts and persuade her to declare this precious hotspot as a Marine Protected Area, and kill the project for good. Join now the call now urging Bachelet to make saving the penguins her legacy.
