To South African President Jacob Zuma and Minister for Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande::

As citizens deeply concerned by the deep inequities in South Africa and the violence surrounding the #FeesMustFall protests -- including police use of stun grenades, rubber bullets and tear gas -- we call on you act immediately to resolve the crisis. Freeze the proposed raise of university fees, get all the relevant parties around the table, and agree sustainable solutions that allow every South African student access to a quality education, regardless of the home they were born into.

South Africans from poorer families -- most of them black -- can’t afford university, and now the government wants to raise fees again! Student protests across the country are turning violent, but we can bring a peaceful yet powerful voice to help solve the crisis.

Police are trying to subdue students with stun grenades, rubber bullets and tear gas -- and the government seems frozen in shock. Something is urgently needed to break the deadlock.

Ours is one of the largest movements in SA -- over 300,000 people and growing.
