Body cams for cops

To legislators across the country:

We urge you to pass legislation, with respect for privacy and civil liberties, that requires police officers who interact with the public to wear body cameras. Research shows body cameras on police officers reduce the use of force by police against citizens by 87%. They also reduce citizens’ attacks on police officers, and help to prosecute actual criminals. Body cameras are a commonsense solution to reducing violence against unarmed citizens.

Body cams for cops
By now the whole country has seen the senseless killing of Walter Scott -- but only because a brave citizen took cell-phone footage. That's why putting body cameras on police officers is so important. But precincts across the country, even in South Carolina where Scott was shot, are still saying no.

Today, at least 15 state legislatures, including South Carolina, are considering bills that would require police to wear body cameras in interactions with the public. It’s a simple solution where everyone wins -- citizens and officers both behave better when they know they’re being recorded. Now is when legislators need to hear from us, to push the body camera bills over the edge.

Sign the petition supporting smart use of body cameras by police officers -- and we’ll deliver the message to state houses across the country.
