Stop Gambia's anti-gay crackdown
Neven Mimica, EU Development Commissioner, and EU leaders:
As concerned global citizens, we appeal to you to suspend the EU’s new aid programme for Gambia until the government ends the persecution of people perceived to have a different sexual orientation and repeals all provisions of the Criminal Code that criminalise sexual relations between consenting adults.

The best way to make President Jammeh stop this crackdown is by showing him that it will deter foreign aid and investment, putting a major dent in the economy and crippling his plans to make Gambia the "smiling coast of Africa". The EU is about to decide whether to release a 150 million euro aid package for Gambia. If enough of us urge the new EU Development chief to freeze this support until Jammeh ends the persecution and repeals all anti-gay laws, we can stop this state-sponsored homophobia!
Since the recent passage of a draconian anti-gay bill in Gambia, the situation has started spiralling out of control. Let’s call on the EU to use its power to stop the brutal campaign against Gambia’s gays and lesbians and send a strong signal to other countries not to follow the same path.
